Godavari - Celluloid Sweetness

A movie that deserves more than one post. I hope to make atleast one detailed post in the near future. Actors, photography, music, lyrics and background score - all merge as harmoniously as the waters of Godavari, the Paapi hills, the hues of sky and the rays of the sun. Veturi’s lyrics are truly beautiful. When a lyrically challenged guy (me) could understand and appreciate (though not completely) the song “raama chakkani seetaki...”, it shows how beautiful the lyrics could be for those who can understand them fully.

eDama chaetanu Sivuni villunu...ettina aa raamuDe
ettagalaDa seeta jaDanu taaLi kaTTe vaeLalO

That Rama who could lift Siva’s bow with his left hand
Can He lift Sita’s plait when he ties the Thaali?

I would love if someone can post the rest of the lyrics. Or atleast give me the links. If it is with transliteration it would be good and if it has translation (even selected lines would do), it would be great.

Thanks Shekar Kammula & the team for not letting me down.

Check out the lyrics and the song here

For a more beautiful description (not review), check these Ramblings on Godavari

hi meera,

i found myself on ur roll. Thanks :-) Actually i too plan to update my roll, but laziness and search for a nice classification of blogs is putting that exercise off.

my name? I found two places where it has has been put. Let me see if you can fish them out ;-)

Orkut? et tu meera?

Hv 3 invites in my mailbox but still not attracted enuf to register....i find exploring ppl through blogs more interesting

and godavari? may be u should wait for the detailed post which badly want to make, but short of time..

i guessed that......no telugu songs on ur list... but may be the indifference of audience is equally responsible for the slump in the quality... anyways, may be u shud try songs of godavari, to begin with..

there is lot more than that.. hope i would be able to make a detailed post on it as desired

the first thing that i did after reaching hyd was to watch this movie (although it was after Pokiri...it heard Ileana and I could'nt miss it either). FYI I am in Hyd and am leaving on 25th night.

This movie was a really a different one. Although the lyrics is the last thing that i concentrated on...the shere photography and the beautiful locales was amazing. I think my next holiday is on Godavari...hope the tourism does commercialize it

But this soft love story did not strike much chords with me. Maybe it is due to fact that i could not relate to it even a bit
But am looking forward for your critical analysis of this movie.

How was the exam

Squirrels are considered sacred in India and are not to be harmed. They are even fed by many Hindu

An interesting legend explains the three stripes on the back of most of the squirrels. During the

construction of the Adi sethu (bridge) at Rameswaram by Lord Rama and the vanara sena, a little

squirrel also contributed in its own little way. It rolled in the beach sand and then ran to the end

of the sethu to shake off the sand from its back (chanting Lord Rama’s name all along).

Lord Rama, pleased by the creature’s dedication, caressed the squirrel’s back and ever since, the

Indian squirrel carried three white stripes on its back, which are believed to be the mark of Lord

Rama’s fingers.)

Fantabulous ..... :-)

If I knew that there existed such kind souls who would give such patient and detailed response, then I would start a blog exclusively to post my lyrical requests.

Incidentally, I too hear it as 'kundaradana', though it might be because I am acoustically challenged, slightly.

Idhe oopu lo Uppongele Godavari kooda translate chesthe ..... ;-)

Once again......my deepest gratitude

shaDjamaM bhavati vEdaM

Sa : Shadjamam : this is the base note of the octave, the name Shad-ja itself
meaning "giving birth to next 6 notes".

sa ni vedam la pujiyalli (got it from one of my friends who learnt classical music)

paMchamaM bhavati naadaM

P : Panchamam as in Pa in Sarigamapadanisa

pachamam anedi paata ku naadam ani antte rhythm

Sruti SikharE nigamaharE swaralaharE

So it means if u treat Sa like Vedam and Pa like rythm then using the correct sruti you can create
a Swaralahari (Kudos to my friend to help me translate this)

uppoMgelE gOdaavari oogiMdilE chElO vari

- Godavri rose and vari is the rice fields so the rice fields were swaying when Godavari rose

bhoodaarilO neelaambari maa seemakE cheenaambari
- its like the neelamabari raagam on the earth or smthn like the blue sky on earth
- maa seemake cheenaambari ante probably he is referring to the green rice fields being like the silk spread in the valley

vetalu teerchu maa dEvEri vEdamaMTi maa gOdaari

- the goddess who takes away all out troubles or woes and who is like the vedam...Godavari is equated to the vedas

Sabari kalisina gOdaari raama charitakE poodaari

- The banks of the Godavari river where Sabari met Rama and it paved the way to the Rama charitha or Ramayana where Rama eats the frutis offered by Shabari

vEsey^ chaapa jOrusEy^ naava

- Veesay chapa is the sail that moves with the force of the wind and the the boat moves ahead

baaru sEy^ vaalugaa chukkaanE choopugaa

- It goes ahead seeking its direction from the star

bratuku teruvu edureetagaa

- Its like our life going against the waves.

saavaasaalu saMsaaraalu chilipi chilaka jOsyaM

- He is referring to the life on the boat ...so saavasalu as in friendships..samsaaralu as in families n chilipi chilaka josyam, the naughty parrot predicting your future

vEsE aTlu veyyaMgaanE laabhasaaTi bEraM

- Referring to the dosas on the boat that is a profitable business.

iLLE ODalaipOtunna iMTi panula dRSyam

- Again referring to the activities on the boat which are quite similar to the chores at home

aarEsETi aMdaalanni aDigE neeTi addaM

- Probably referring to the spices or colourful clothes left to dry and the reflection of which is on the water...so its the water that is asking for the beautiful things on the boat.

EM taggiMdi maa raamayya bhOgaM
ikkaDa nadi oorEgiMpulO paDava meeda laagaa
prabhuvu taanu kaadaa

- What should be less in Lord Rama's prosperity here...Is he not the lord in the procession on the river?

gOdaaramma kumkaMboTTu diddE mirapa erupu

- Refers to the dried chilis tht look like Godavari's bottu

-The rains bring along the silt and the sediment from the highlands. The river changes its hue from clear to red in an instant (idlebrain)

laMkaanaathuDiMkaa aaganaMTu panDlu koruku
- Refers to the anger of Ravana when comes to Panchavati to take Seeta to Lanka where he is upset abt Seeta not crossing the lakshmana rekha to give him alms.

choosE choopu EM cheppiMdi seetaa kaaMtaki

- What did the hues tell Seeta or wat did the sight tell her...was it the impending danger?

saMdEhaala mabbE paTTe choosE kaMTiki

lOkaM kaani lOkaMlOna EkaMtaala valapu

- Probably referring to the alternating current that fascinates a person or it might be a person is transgressed into a different world that fascinates him.

ala pApi koMDala nalupu kaDagalEka navvu tanaku raagaa

- Godavari laughs because she cannot remove the darkness of the Papi mountains along side tht it flows

I like this description from idlebrain

As the river moves a little further up, "pApi konDalu" proudly stand on either side, observing all the action from high atop. The clear river snakes alongside the dark hills, greeting it as a dear old friend who has stood tall by its side all this time, as a great testament to eternal friendship. "konDala maTTini kaDigaesi, nalupu niganigalu virichaesi, koTTukuni pOvu gOdAri, kashTAla neeDaerchu rahadaari"

It was a translation that was truly worth waiting for. :-)

Thanks a million.

I think you should start a blog exclusively for translation of lyrics. You can count me as a regular visitor.

Anonymous said...

I will do so..when I have loads of patience to do so

Hi,

I should appreciate Anonymous efforts at transliteration, but I am a little disappointed that its a very rudimentary transliteration. There is a lot more to the lyrics than just that. In fact, the essence of the romance is lost in Rama chakkani sita ki when you transliterate. If you consider the lyrics : "udatha veepuna vellu... etthagalada seeta jadanu thaali katte velalo" - This is one most soothing and romantic lines that describes what a knockdown beauty Sita is by elevating the strength and valor of Rama. Another example: "Pudami alludu" - Sita (or Janaki), is the daughter of the soil (remember King Janaka found Sita while tilling the soil), and hence Rama is the son-in-law of Earth (Anon almost got there but am just pointing where the exact intent was).

Also, with "Uppongale Godavari" - lot of instances where the literal meaning doesnt work and you have take it in context of the spirit of the song. "Sabari kalisina Godavari" - Not many know that Sabari is a tributary of Godavari and meets it at Kunavaram(I am from that place). The whole song is more of a tribute to the life and times of the mighty Godavari and the people who are dependent on it.

Please dont take it that I am finding fault here. I am just saying that transliteration takes out most of the spirit and romance of the song in this case.

@ Vamsy

I am not sure if the "Anonymous" visits this blog anymore these days. Anyways, I would love if you can give your prespective on the songs.

This is so sweet. It is wonderful to see the meaning all in one place. Saved me lot of time as I started putting the meaning together.

My daughter's dance teacher (Tamilian) is doing choreography for this song and this is of immense help.
