....Curiously, it is Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who has no known electoral base and holds office by virtue of being a member of the Rajya Sabha, who has been allowed to pull the trigger on the political arrangement ......How many times have Sitaram Yechuri and Prakash Karat been elected to Lok Sabha? I lack general awareness. So, please let me know.
Doubt III : Parliamentary Democracy
After a long long time I read The Hindu and found this.

yes you lack general awareness about party structure of left and congress or BJP. In congress, leader of the party is supreme but in left polit bureau is supreme. you can say there is parliamentary board in congress but u know all decision is left for the high command and that is Sonia Gandhi. just tell me how many times u read in any newspaper that any kind of decision has been left for Prakash Karat. In left System, party structure is supreme. even if u are MP donot think yourself u will overrule party high command but in congress sonia gandhi is above party system. in bjp u know how many times Vajpayee slips his mouth and no one dares to tell him anything but in left when jyoti basu said it was historical mistake to not be in government then he had been scolded by polit bureau. my friend its two different system so donot compare and interpret it literally. in china, people select the office bearer of party and then select the ruling member. my point is china follows different procedure which is indeed different to our procedure does not automatically attracts criticism. democracy like human rights can not be universal although we have universal declaration of human rights. your comment would be valid only when BJP or any other party would criticise because they follow the same procedure but left follow the different procedure so donot compare apple with orange.
note.. i am neutral in both procedure.
So what?
The point in question is the uncalled oblique reference to the lack of a “known electoral base” and holding office by “virtue of being a member of the Rajya Sabha”. You never responded to that.
Does the fact that Karat belongs to a party that has different style of functioning makes him more qualified despite being in the same league?
Please correct me if i am wrong.you have asked the question in such a manner that it seems that if in place of yechuri and Karat, vajpayee or advani who are elected to Lok Sabha do this, then the quoted statement from hindu would be justified.and thats why i said they are two different political setup and donot compare apple with orange. this statement comes also from the reference that pm himself has said in nov 2007 that he will be abide by the sentiment of the house. now the question comes what does mean 'sentiments of the house.'In my opinion generally it means majority of the house. i said generally and it is true most of the time. Suppose tomorrow, PM along with left gives entire Kashmir(assume it is constitutionally possibly)to Pak and he has majority in house to do this, then BJP can argue that it is not sentiments of the people or even sentiments of the house. but in parliamentary system, sentiments is house is equivalents to majority of the house. now the question of quoted article comes. it is well established fact that when it was discussed in parliament then UPA minus left was in minority supporter of deal. so pm said he will be abide by sentiments of the house but later he backtracked and in this regard this statement was made. plz donot read to much between the line becuse u also know that N. Ram is sympathasier of left ideology. it is the reason he wrote and nothing wrong in it. you also might know becuse u must read frontline that he is not fan of LTTE. so u will always find anything against LTTE in Hindu or Frontline and it has lot of example like Karuna scenario where hindu has written obituary of LTTE and many more example and reason is that N. Ram donot like Prabhakaran. My humble point is you have understood the quote in different way and donot read too much between the line.
No harm in sympathizing. But, there is a reasonable way to do it. And to expect that is not asking too much.
@ Jaiv,
I think u r a bit confused.Lets leave the merit of right-centre-left political setups. Lets also leave the merit of stance taken by the them regarding nuclear deal. (everybody knows none,(the left, gov, bjp) are transparent)
The contention of mr.cv is the reference made by the editorial regarding "the lack of a known electoral base and holding office by virtue of being a member of the Rajya sabha.
That is truely uncalled for.Had the pm been a member of loksabha, would that have justified pm's act and would have garnered public support. Avid readers of Hindu have read 'n' number of times the paper supporting the "elders house", "its intellect" etc.Yes the editorial board may have its own opinion, but even our constitution doesnt put bar on Rajyasabha members becoming Prime minister. The above quoted statement is seriously subjective view of the editorial board which is truely uncalled for.
And regarding mr.cv questioning "sitaramyechury and karat" (and not advani or vajpayee), I dont think theres anything wrong with it.Mr.Ram has openly said that theres nothing wrong of an editorial board having a stance or view when someone questioned about the papers left ward tilt. When u r backing somebody, questions would definitely be asked regarding them. When somebody points at an ant in others plate inspite of having an elepahnt in his own, questions will be asked.Mr.CV has every right to ask.Irrespective of opinion/tilt the editorial board has,its readers have the very right to question and contend and to expect that is not asking too much. The readers editor of Hindu Mr.Rangarajan has also endorsed this.
And when mr.cv says he lacks general awareness, dont ever think so and definitely not of an IRS officer who cracked civils. He has a unique/satirical way of putting/looking at things. lol.
@ CV,
neither mr.karat nor mr.yechury have ever been elected directly.not even as panchayat ward members.
